Well, IT finally happened !
You probably saw it on the TV news (ABC and better coverage on Ch.11) but rife with errors. You probably even saw it all over the 'net.(news websites like CNN). Click on "Bergenfield home invasion."
I was the victim of a home invasion by the thug who previously burglarized my home 5 times before ! Yes, ME ! Some errors.
Up to 2:30 p.m., things were normal - or SEEMED normal. I had just come downstairs to make a snack, and was going back upstairs, while it was cooking *** for something - can not recall what it was now -thanks to the nightmare attack ! Suddenly this black-masked THUG appeared on the stairs, shouted something and then grabbed one of 2 canes hanging on the bannister* and smashed at my head with it ! I fell down the stairs and landed on my back !
I am not as fast as I once was, and also I was injured, and thus could not get up to escape. He forced me down on my face and ripped off my belt, tore it apart. He tied my hands behind my back with it. He then worked my wallet out of my pocket **
and ripped it up, scattering the cards, but taking some money (the news reports estimated some $10, which I feel was a good estimation). He somehow did not find my cash-box ** which was good !
All this time I felt helpless fear and terror.
He then fled through the garage ,despite my efforts to secure it***, vanishing without a trace ! It took me about 2 minutes to work my hands out of the truss he made of the belt, and then head to a neighbor to alert them. He called the cops, and soon the whole street knew of the home invasion. There was a crowd and police cars and an ambulance, and firemen (iv) (I needed stitches for the head wound. Oddly that never hurt, then or later, but aches & pains continue, once shock wore off.)
I was taken to Holy Name Hospital,my head gash stitched up and then released. I had EXPECTED an overnight stay, but to my surprise was released. Still, I had trouble getting to sleep ,fearing another attack from the hooded thug. I twitched at every odd sound, lest it be his step. I still feel fear...
Oddly,my head wound never hurt. It was my right wrist and joints that still ache at times from the fall down the stairs.
The locks of the house will be changed, perhaps an ADT system installed. The combination of the garage door opener will be changed. I also am firmly set on not living alone anymore, lest I someday die alone and un-noticed, but will move to an apartment. That I plan ASAP.
* One once belonged to my grandmother and the other to my greatgrandmother, no idea which was which. The police took the bloodied one away for forensic DNA testing. My own DNA would be ruled out by a DNA swab. The truss made from my belt was also taken away for any clues it can yield. I think, however, the thug wore gloves, but I do not know. I DO know of his shoe print.
** I had the wallet and cash box in the living room, but neither had ready cash :I was using debit cards , both stolen, one night, and immediately cancelled by the bank which spotted an unusual spending pattern. The temporary replacement card was also stolen the next night. I now keep my wallet in my pants or shirt pocket at all times, on the advice of an old family friend, and my cash-box elsewhere.
*** The back door of the garage was found ajar one morning -start of Dec. at the latest, and some ladders knocked down. I've since not ohnly locked it, but blocked it off PERMANENTLY by dragging a heavy chest of drawers, a box of rocks, and other heavy objects stacked on top and positioning all such slap against that door. The masked thug must have figured out the combination of the automatic garage door since.
(iv) The snack I was cooking had caught fire and burned up during the attack. There was smudge-smoke in the house air, which was why the firemen were there. Windows were opened to air the house and one set of venetian blinds was so messed up that I am throwing it out and replacing it with curtains.
